Today, his organisation, the Refugee Integration Organisation (RIO) has made Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) available to the Krisan and Ampain refugee camps in Ghana, the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, as well as to migrants in India. RIO presently provides UBI to 2,300 refugees and migrants. The project runs on Blockchain technology, is funded by the Celo crypto currency, and is delivered through a USSD integration in order to be able to serve the most vulnerable of refugees who do not have access to smartphones, making this programme the first of its kind in the world. The beneficiaries are able to claim and receive $1.50 a day into their mobile money accounts every day.
Rya is the Global lead for Equity and Inclusion for Refugees and Migrants for the Global Shapers Community. He speaks 9 international and local languages, is a TEDx Speaker, a World Economic Forum Agenda Contributor and Global Shaper, and a Fellow of the Amani Institute.
